This day is marked as a National Holiday in many countries of the United States of America and is officially celebrated as the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the Americas on October 12, 1492. Christopher Columbus was originally an Italian explorer who sailed across the Atlantic Ocean looking for the faster route to land at a New World. It took him approximately 3 months on his first voyage on the Spanish ships named as Santa Maria, Nina, and La Pinta. Columbian exchange on his arrival introduced the transfer of animals, plants, and human populations between the New World and the old.
Columbus Day is known by many other names in the international spectrum. In a few Latin American countries, this day is known as “Dia de la Raza” which is the Day of a Race. Spain calls it as “Dia de la Hispanidad”. Belize and Uruguay call it as “Dia de las Americas” which is the Day of the Americas. Many societies in the Americas celebrate this day as an annual tradition such as Tammany society in the New York City and Massachusetts Historical Society in Boston. See More Columbus Day Images
Also, the then-president Benjamin Harrison gave a call to the people of the United States to celebrate the landing of Columbus on the 400 anniversary of the event. Teachers, Preachers, and poets used rituals to teach the theory of patriotism on the anniversary which includes the importance of loyalty to the nation, what are the boundaries of a citizen, and social progress.
Columbus Day is also observed as a celebration of Heritage by many Italian-Americans and first, such was held in the New York City on October 12, 1866. The day was initially embodied as a legal holiday in the USA through the lobbying of Angelo Noce who was a first generation Italian staying in Denver.
San Francisco claims to have the oldest celebration with the Italian American community followed by a Columbus Day parade established by Nicalo Larco in 1868. However, New York City boasts to have the largest marches with over 35000 counts and more than one million viewers.
Columbus Day is also a legal holiday in U.S Territory of Puerto Rico and in the Virgin Islands this day is marked as both Columbus Day and “Puerto Rico Friendship Day”. Yorktown victory Day along with the Columbus Day is also celebrated by Virginia to honor the victory at the Siege of Yorktown.
It is also said by many that the evidence proofs that the first Europeans to sail across the Atlantic were explorers from Scandinavia and the land was already populated by Indigenous people who said to have discovered Americas thousands of years before. But this is still a controversy on many counts.
It has also been asserted that Columbus should not be famed for North America’s discovery as he only went as far as a few islands of Caribbean but never completely reached the mainland of Americas and as a result of Columbus invasion the settlement of the Europeans in the Americas led to the death of the massive native people.
