Congress then appointed a 5 man committee including Thomas Jefferson(Virginia) and John Adam(Massachusetts), Roger Sherman(Connecticut), Robert R. Livingstone(New York) and Benjamin Franklin(Pennsylvania) to draft a statement formally on the rational grounds to break with Britain.
