Memorial Day is marked as a federal holiday in the United States for honoring and in the remembrance of people who died for their nation while serving in the Armed Forces of the United States of America. Memorial Day is also considered as an ungratified start of the summer vacation in the entire United States and many people visit memorials and cemeteries to pay tribute to those who sacrificed their lives in the military service.
Soldier’s graves are decorated with flowers and some places the American flag on the grave and are followed as an ancient custom. Earlier it was known as Decoration Day which originated following the Civil War and became the official holiday in 1971.
The Civil War which is considered as the fatal war in the history of the United States claimed more lives than any other clash in the entire history. Every year on this day a moment of remembrance takes place at 3:00 pm local time which asks Americans to pause for a minute and this is the time chosen when most of the Americans are celebrating their freedom on the national holiday.
Almost all the towns and cities host Memorial Day parades which often incorporates military personnel and members of veterans’ organization. Chicago, New York, and Washington D.C host some of the largest parades in the United States.
It was Major General Logan who was also the commander of the Grand Army of Republic made this day as an Official holiday and on May 5, 1868; he issued orders which set aside May 30, 1868, for purpose of decorating the graves and strewing with flowers for comrades who died during defense of their country.
As this day is also an official start of the vacation many loves to cook Lemon Sugar Cookies and their favorite summer salad and would love to carry them to their picnic spots. Many people confuse Memorial Day with the Veteran Day but Memorial Day is the day to remember the people who died serving the nation however Veteran Day is a day when we honor our military veterans who are serving and who served the nation but not necessarily means that they are dead.
